Top 10 Things English Teachers Do on Twitter

How teachers of English are using twitter professionally and personally

TEFL.net on twitterWhen I tell people that I use twitter for work purposes I often hear this complaint: “I don’t get twitter.”

Many people think twitter is just for mobile phone users or that twitter is a waste of time. When you first check out twitter it may seem a bit pointless. What can you actually say in 140 characters? Pardon me for using my grade 6 grammar teacher’s least favourite phrase but the short answer is “a lot”.

Top 10 things English teachers do on Twitter:

  1. find ideas for teaching and writing
  2. share free links and resources
  3. increase blog readership
  4. get a TEFL conversation started
  5. learn a foreign language
  6. get business advice
  7. ask questions to teachers in other countries
  8. search job postings
  9. make friends with other teachers
  10. waste time

If you’re worried that #10 will easily become #1, assign yourself a twitter limit. 15 minutes a day should be all you need for a quick update, search, and RT of your favourite tweets. You may also want to find a few minutes each week to unfollow those who are just chirping.
